Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

how concerned should we be if Russia invades Ukraine? I look at it from the view point that I get the feeling Putin is after one thing :- putting the old Soviet bloc back together. And I fear that if he succeeds, there is little resistance to stop him expanding into Poland & Hungary and possibly dividing Germany once again. And does the EU have the capabilities to stop him from expanding further?

You've heard of Crimea right? If not, Google it (Clue - It's Ukrainian Territory). Also, the War that's been raging in Eastern Ukraine since 2014 isn't plucky resistance fighters v Ukrainian Government Forces, it's Russian Special Forces calling the shots. Your average Eastern Ukrainian Villager doesn't have access to missiles that can shoot down an Airliner....

He's on record as saying (and I'm quoting from memory) that the break-up of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical failure of the 20th century. Read into that what you will...

He might get away with Ukraine but the moment Russian Forces cross the border of a NATO member country Article 5 comes into effect. Article 5 is all about Collective Defence (i.e. an attack on one member is an attack on all) and is the reason we were required to get involved in Afghanistan when in reality we should have had nothing to do with it.

If Putin goes absolutely batshit crazy and sends his Army West, we'll be a pile of Radioactive Ash long before they get near Germany, it simply will not be allowed to happen. Any conventional war would grind to a halt very quickly and both sides would run short of Ammo after 2 or 3 weeks.

NATO War Planning always called for the use of Tactical Nuclear Weapons to halt a Soviet Advance if they crossed into what used to be West Germany. Once that happened it was expected they would retaliate against major NATO bases & NATO HQ. After that it gets very unpleasant. These days with the NATO Border being a lot further East we'd get to this point a lot faster.

At least the ICBMs will make pretty patterns in the sky as they pass each other

I'm sure they could send him a strongly worded e-mail or shuttle between Brussels & Strasbourg to try and confuse him a bit but he'd most likely just piss himself laughing at them. Oh wait he already does that

Next comes the "request" for Russian Forces to protect them.

Apparently the banks the UK Government have sanctioned have already been so by The US for some time. It was being reported today that whilst the Russian stock market was done several percentage points over the last two days that it is actually up 1.5% today, probably a sign that the sanctions are a lot more toothless than the Russian market expected.



Side note, I am enjoying the coverage on Sky News right now as it is currently being presented by Sarah Jane Mee, World War 3 with big tits which to be honest I consider that an acceptable trade off.
