Metropolitan Police horrid thing - Virus/Trojan
Yesterday I managed to somehow download some horrid thing which locked up my computer and claimed to be from the Metropolitan Police. It stated that if I paid a certain sum via Ukash (forgotten how much) as a fine for illegal activity from my internet connection all would be well. Needless to say I paid nothing to Ukash and did a system restore. Everything looks OK now, so I hope the problem is fixed, but some people claim this kind of virus or trojan whatever it is will continue lurking on your computer in some way even when apparently removed?

make sure all anti spyware, virus, malware etc is uptodate. restart your machine in safe mode by pressing f8 before the windows logo appears this will take you a menu and select safe mode. then run all your anti whatevers in a full check this should pick up the trojan or virus.

i use avast, super antispyware and malwarebytes which are free to download from download.com

hopefully this helps.

I recommend Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Install it, update it (important) and then scan your system. Good luck.

a friend of mine got this trojan and was scared stiff that the metropolitan police were asking for £100. although i told him it had to be a scam he took it to his local police station where they were very friendly and put his mind at rest. needless to say if anyone falls for the scam and pays the £100 to ukash it will not fix the computer anyway so you won't be any better off.

Just by way of a warning to people, there's a Strathclyde Police version of this ukash virus going around. It's got to be one of the best/worst computer viruses ever, because not only does it lock up your computer it preys on the unsuspecting who unfortunately cough up the £100 fine.

As long as you have decent AV software, you should be fine. And of course I would assume that if you called the police on a non-emergency number they would put your mind at ease.

Even when you do have good anti-virus software always be sure to back all your important documents up to an external device.

Fair enough, Linux is virtually immune to viruses/trojans, but most people wouldn't have a clue as to how to use Linux to it's potential, even I don't and I'm a computer/tech kind of guy.

I removed it by doing a system restore, to be on the safe side, but you probably don't need to be that drastic. You can start the computer in safe mode and then run malwarebytes and hopefully that should fix it.
