TV picture quality

I've just got myself a new TV with LCD screen, which is the first time I've had anything LCD, and it doesn't seem to me that the picture quality is as good as I had before on an old style CRT. Are my eyes deceiving me, or have a bought a duff TV (Technika), or is there a way of adjusting the picture to make it better? I've looked at the picture setup but honestly wouldn't know what to change to effect an improvement. The picture doesn't look that sharp to me at the moment, unless watching the babe channels today has mesmerised me into sitting too close to the screen, lol. Any advice from TV experts would be appreciated, as I'm convinced the picture's a bit fuzzy. Maybe I'm just not used to looking at LCD?

I went though this shock in the summer with my first digital telly. The babe channels are all low grade when set beside say BBC or Film Four, the first thing to ask is how close to the screen are you? I would suggest some tweaking of the settings but I don't know what you are using now. Try reducing the sharpness to around 65% then reduce contrast. If the settings are straight from the box chances are everything is too high - colour/brightness/contrast/sharpness.

It depends on the size of the tv as some 40inch+ tv's are of poor picture & sound quality especially if it's an old model, also the make as some are very poor. I've just spent £550 on a Toshiba Regza 42AV635DB 42-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV with Freeview and Resolution + & i can honestly say it's the worst tv i've ever watched the sound is extremely low & poor the picture is distorted & too bright & if you change the brightness there's no difference, i sent it back but the new one is the same, it turns out it's an old model which doesn't sell anymore, i got it from a catalogue which means i'll probably pay a total of about £700-£800 for a tv which currys were selling for £400 in the hope that people would buy it.

If you want a tv for sport & movies then your best bet is a 37inch plasma, LG, Panasonic or Sharp.

Check out Club Paradiso and Elite if you're judging your TV on the babe channels, as they seem to have the best picture. But as mikeboob says the babe channels may not be the best thing to use to make a true evaluation of picture quality.

912 and 915 have the best picture quality I think, quite why others are poorer remains a mystery.

What tv is better, plasma or lcd?

Have you got a 1.3a or b HDMI cable? often the ones that come with the tv are cheap ones.

But the babe channels are poor anyway.

If you have sky HD the BBC HD channel has a HD test card after the programs,there's no set time as to when it's on but if you can catch it it's very a helpful guide to getting all the settings sorted.

Ultimate quality is determined by the source i.e. the broadcasts, which, generally, are poor (whether babe channels or mainstream), but that's digital 'progress' for you

Also, what size is it, and what is the viewing distance? People seem to have been conned into buying much larger sets than they should really have, which just magnifies how poor the broadcast quality is.

FWIW, I prefer CRT to LCD/Plasma; others will disagree, I imagine.

But some others like me will agree, as LCD pictures I've seen don't strike me as being as good as CRT. I haven't ever looked at Plasma very much so I can't comment on that. Does anyone make CRT TVs anymore?
