Room (2015) The story of a mother and son(Brie Larson & Jacob Tremblay) confined to a shed known as Room. As Larson and Tremblay are on screen together for much of the film, this piece depends on the strength of the script, performances and screen chemistry, all of which are delivered in spades, including a fabulous occasional narration from Tremblay which is written in an amazing childlike way. The film digs deep into complexities of human emotions and the human psyche, while script is by turns, tense, funny and emotional, stopping the plot going along easy routes. Joan Allen is very good as Larson's mother, its a shame we don't see more of the excellent William H Macy. The minimalist soundtrack completely suits the mood of the film. Also starring Sean Bridgers,Amanda Brugel, Cas Anvar and Tom McCamus. 8/10

Capone(1975)

A biopic from director Steve Carver charting the infamous gangster's rise to prominence, from bootlegger to untouchable mobb boss and the ultimate crumbling of his empire in Chicago.Ben Gazzara is brilliant as Capone, poised, charming and threatening all at once, backed up strongly by Susan Blakeley,Peter Maloney,Dick Miller and Sylvester Stallone.

7/10

Despicable Me 3 - 7/10.

Not as good as the first, but better than the second and the Minion movie. A lot of fun.

A ruthless gangster ends up in prison after being double-crossed. Undeterred, he prepares for his release and for the vengeance he will unleash in his bid to reclaim his power and wealth.

So....if your into gratuitous violence with plenty of claret & camera work as steady as Oscar pretorius knocking back a pint on a high wire while playing with his shooter....This is the movie for you!!!!

6.5/10.... It had it's moments!

Rocky II (1979)

Underdog local hero Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) returns to the ring for 15 more bruising rounds with World Heavyweight Champ Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in the rematch of the century. Everyone knows the story, but having watched it several times now I actually like it more than the original. There's more development of the characters away from the fight and their increased back story is important to the continuity of the series. The finish, whilst probably predictable, is actually more exciting and generates a more emotionally charged response from it's audience. Not the greatest boxing movie, but for me the most enjoyable entry in this particular series. Talia Shire, Burt Young, Burgess Meredith and Tony Burton also star. 3.5 / 5

When Billie Beat Bobby(2001) I was pleased to find this made for TV film as it covers the same story as the soon to be released Battle Of The Sexes, when in 1973 ex tennis player and self confessed male chauvinist Bobby Riggs challenged Billie Jean King to a tennis match. It is a lively, enjoyable movie and both Ron Silver and Holly Hunter tackle their roles with gusto, however the script is kinder to Hunter playing King as it shows the star's quieter less confident moments but pretty much all of Silver's scenes are played at the same fast pace, no of fault of Silver's. Partly billed as a comedy, there are some amusing moments, though some bits are cringy/cheesy and fall flat. The tennis matches are skilfully shot and edited. Also starring Matt Letscher(Larry,King's husband),Bob Gunton,Jacqueline McKenzie(Margaret Court),Elizabeth Berridge(Rosie Casals),Fred Willard,Trevor Goddard and Jill Brennan(Billie's mother). 6.5/10

Astro Boy(2009) An android replica of a boy(voiced by Freddie Highmore) tries to find acceptance in Metro City and beyond. A strongly animated film with an excellent futuristic design and a few things to say about robot 'rights' and tolerance. The action scenes and plot are nothing special but there are fair amount of clever, emotional and amusing moments and plenty of likeable characters. Other voices include Bill Nighy,Donald Sutherland, Kristen Bell,Nicolas Cage,Nathan Lane and Samuel L Jackson. 6.5/10
