Help with PS3 setup.

can someone help me ?

i have a ps3 which as built in blu-ray and a sony bravia hd tv but i need help in setting it up, i bought an hdmi lead a few weeks bck it only cost 5 pound, do i av to buy a special ps3 one ? or should this cheap one do the job?

I've got a PS3 and use an Asda basic HDMI cable I bought for a few quid, £3.99 If I remember rightly, which I switched to after using one of those gold plated, over-priced jobbies I borrowed from my gadget snob mate for a few days 'til I got down the shops. I can say in all honesty, there's no difference whatsoever. He comes down to mine, grumbles and moans that I need a better HDMI cable, complains that I don't route my sound through a 5.1 system and 101 other niggly complaints that type of person always makes. He's just nerdgassing. For the vast majority of people, there's no discernible difference, for a tiny minority who make their living staring at hi-res images all day (photographers, graphic designers and suchlike) there's a small difference. For carpet fitters or brick-layers who go on like that, it's a form of snobbery designed to try and make people feel inferior. Unless you're a person who makes a living from hi-res images (which you mustn't be, or else you wouldn't have needed to ask in the first place), the cheap and basic HDMI cable will do the job very nicely indeed.

Setting up is easy enough. Your HDMI cable goes into the slot on the back right of your PS3 and your telly will autodetect the console's output and size the screen accordingly. Depending on the make of the telly, you may get a blue screen for a second or two because of the slight lag from your telly as your PS3 switches from 1080i, which is the OS menu resolution, to 720p, which is the resolution most of the games play in. The same when you put in a Blu-ray film. That's perfectly normal, though.

ive done that but it came up saying an hdmi lead as been detected would you like to stream audio and visual through it, i clicked ok and ive been staring at a black screen for the past 5 mins

Hmmm. Strange. Mine also did that, but it was a lot quicker than 5 mins. 1½ to 2 mins, tops.

You've done the obvious stuff? Switching off power to the PS3 and telly, unplugging the leads, plugging them back in and powering up again? Made sure to unplug your previous scart based cables and so on? I know these are obvious questions, but it's easy to forget the obvious stuff when you're faffing around on your hands and knees behind the telly and surrounded by cables, leads, extensions and those dustballs you're pretending not to notice. I once spent an hour fuming about the fact my Sky box wasn't working properly, when I'd only remembered to check the scart lead was connected to the telly correctly, without thinking to check the connection to the box was inserted properly.

Actually you do need a reasonably good one, not massively expensive ones. what's more important is the rating (for wont of a better word). Hdmi 1.3. The cheapest ones tend to be 1 and 1.2, but that can lead to image blacking out on the tv.

k, brace yourself for another question that will make me look retarded, at what point do you take the scart lead ?obviously i need at first so i can see the options when im trying to install the hdmi lead. ill walk you through what ive done, first ive connected the hdmi lead whilst at the same time using the scart lead too, i turn the power on and it says there is an hdmi detected blah blah blah would you like to use it for audio etc i click ok then my screen goes black, for how long i dont know, i gave up after 20 mins and turned it off. at what point do i take the scart out

Take the scart out while it's powered down, plug in the HDMI cable and power it up again. Select "yes" if it asks the question again, and that should sort it, assuming it's an issue with the machine trying to stream the A/V through two different outputs. Obviously, you'll need to switch your TV to the correct HD output channel prior to doing this.

ha sorted it, thanx mate, good job. now all i need to do is get my one and only blu-ray of my mate then its all good lol. hey if ur not to busy i do have another ps3 related question if your wanna sort that out too
