It must have dented the webhosts business somewhat, losing a customer the size of megaupload.

The US Attorney's Office leading the prosecution of Megaupload founder Kim Dotocm and his associates has told the court that the companies hosting Megaupload data might begin deleting data on February 2, according to an AP report.

"The execution of those search warrants [on the servers] has now been completed," said the government letter. "The United States copied selected Mega Servers and copied selected data from some of the other Mega Servers, but did not remove any of the Mega Servers from the premises.

"Now that the United States has completed execution of its search warrants, the United States has no continuing right to access the Mega Servers. The Mega Servers are not in the actual or constructive custody or control of the United States, but remain at the premises controlled by, and currently under the control of, Carpathia and Cogent. Should the defendants wish to obtain independent access to the Mega Servers, or coordinate third-party access to data housed on Mega Servers, that issue must be resolved directly with Cogent or Carpathia. It is our understanding that the hosting companies may begin deleting the contents of the servers beginning as early as February 2, 2012."

Since Megaupload's assets are frozen, company attorney Ira Rothken told AP reporter Joshua Freed that Megaupload was unable to continue to pay its hosting providers, but that he had been working with prosecutors to keep the data—belonging to at least 50 million Megaupload users—from being erased.

Carpathian and Cogent representatives have not commented on the letter.

Interesting. But who actually owns the servers? Were they just rented, or did Mega buy the servers and just pay for the bandwidth used?

I don't think either the hosts or Mega have the right to access the data, as it's still covered under the Data Protection Act. But depending on who actually owns the servers, then they have the right delete & re-use the hardware in any way they see fit.

If anyone wants legitimate files back from Megaupload there is now a help website set up at megaretrieval.com which may make some efforts to identify legal files on the servers and return them to their owners.

As if any of us are going ask them for our babe channel video's back. Yeah, I can just see them accepting our word that we have copyright permission to legally own & post them. Even though we do.

The latest plan is to restore Megaupload but on a self-access basis only, i.e. you can login to your own account and download any files there, but file sharing will be turned off, so download links for other users would not exist.

Hell, even that's better than nothing. At least it would give us the chance to back-up our files rather than lose them. We can always upload them to another host then.

This mega retreival site is aimed at helping mega upload users in the US and is only worth contacting if that's where you are. If you're not in the US they aren't interested. But if they find a solution, like providing self-access for a short time, then I guess it would benefit everyone anyway wherever you are.

silly question - can you still download mega-upload files ? i havent read all of this thread so i dont know. i have'nt even attempted to download any of these mega-upload files that were on the forum before what has happpened just incase the goverment are watching me lol
